The Gòtic neighbourhood is the oldest core of the city and its old town, and it is where most of the buildings and streets with historical significance of the city are located. Over the centuries it has assumed the role of centre of political and institutional representation.
The Gòtic quarter is made up, at the same time, of different historic quarters that retain their own personality: El Call, Sant Just i Pastor, Santa Maria del Pi, the Cathedral, Santa Anna, La Mercè and El Palau.
The historical urbanisation axes of the neighbourhood correspond to the Roman cardo and decumanus in the highest part of the old Mount Táber (Plaza de Sant Jaume).
The structure of the neighbourhood arrived intact until the 19th century, although the internal morphology had changed drastically during the 18th century due to the great densification it suffered; The large mansions were subdivided into irregular flats and lacking in services, every plot was taken advantage of, the orchards that still remained were suppressed, poorly lit and poorly ventilated rooms were created and the old houses were demolished to build new ones with a disproportionate increase in the height.
The 19th century will be one of the great transformations in the structure and morphology of the Gòtic. The transformation of parish cemeteries into public squares, the emptying of large buildings with the consequent change of use, the demolition of the walls and other urban development actions caused the Gòtic to begin to be perceived as a prestigious collective heritage, with a use value for its territorial and historical centrality, which had to be preserved.
The heritage value it represents, the variety and differences of the other neighbourhoods that make it up and, therefore, the complexity of the urban processes that take place in this area, have led it to specialise in the tertiary sector of activity, and it has become the most important centre of commerce in Barcelona and Catalonia.
